Chimney Tuckpointing
Chimney Tuckpointing is a common maintenance task for brick chimneys. Though bricks in a chimney will last for well over a hundred years, the mortar joints holding them together will require maintenance. The life of mortar joints is dependent on both the materials used in constuction as well as the climate and exposure conditions of a region. Thus the lifetime of a chimney and it's masonry can vary greatly from region to region and home to home.
The most common reason for tuckpointing or repointing is moisture penetration into small cracks and spaces in the joints. In cold temperatures moisture will freeze and expand, causing a steady deterioration over time if not repaired.
